Radio is still controlled by record companies, but the companies are in such financial distress, they aren't taking chances or building bands anymore. Street level promotion and playing live is the way to go, but the opportunities to play, without having to pay-to-play, are virtually gone unless you're a cover band.

Hell to the YES! Supporting local, unsigned bands is important. Networking is crucial! Pay to go see your favorite bands. If you can, help get other bands on a bill. Buy merch and help promote others, not just yourselves. Talk about the local scene as much as you can to help the "hype."
