Story

I have written about 300 songs, most not very good, but some I consider worthy of sharing. I am currently working on finalizing a sci-fi musical called Planet of Beautiful People by the Interstellar Fur Traders.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Music is the song ideas and the recording. Many times the song idea is strong, even though all music is derivative, and it is possible to be entertaining and maybe informing. Other times it not so much, but we almost always think our current song is good. For me, so long as it is a creative outlet is what mostly matters. Once in a while I stumble on ideas I really enjoy, and on others to share them with.

What is your music dream?

To have one song become a hit, most likely by someone else.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

End poverty.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

Henry VIII

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

The Who, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues, Jimi Hendrix, Gram Parsons, Ry Cooder, Little Feat, Yes, Todd Rundgren, Supertramp, Leo Kottke, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Robert Palmer, The Police, The Doors.

What inspires you to make music?

Life, the universe and everything.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

I am a progressive liberal, and I believe in science, and peace, love and understanding is good but not always easy to find.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

I don't. Never have.

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

There is a virtual Youtube presence possible outside local performance presence. This is a theoretical exponential increase in possible exposure, but it is easy to get lost in the numbers. For those who can play local, it still is tough. You really have to want to be a musician, especially for a livelihood. The internet options are not organized, and moreso overwhelming. Rewards are given out not often on the basis of sheer talent.

What do you think of Drooble?

I am new to it, so now I have high hopes. I enjoy commenting on music, so that is a big plus.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

It isn't my success, it is how easy it is to be unknown regardless of talent and insight.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

Not much. I don't go to clubs or concerts much.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

Feel passionate but businesslike about your music. It takes a lot of effort for a long time.

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.

Jason McNiff, Graham Shankarji Hunt, Ultraviolet Uforia
