Russ Barnett

Story

I beat some drums, strum a few chords, write a few songs. I'm also learning to play the Dejembe , but they don't have that as an option to list here. Just an old guy having fun and entertaining myself. If someone likes something I create, that's great. If not it's all good too. No expectations other than to have some fun. Actually pulling for some of you young folks to have the musical success.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Music is a major major part of my life. It gives me peace, a sense of accomplishment, and just an all around serious buzz. Love to play write it, play it, record it, get challenged by it. All of it .

What is your music dream?

Just to continue writing and recording. Putting songs out there so I can get some feedback and learn how to improve all aspects of my music.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

eliminate hate and aggression.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

Wow, too many to mention. Let's just say I was a little kid when rock burst onto the scene in the fifties, so there are dozens of artists from there and all the way up to the present who have influenced me in one way or another.

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

Far too many to mention, but I think a lot of them are reflected in my music.

What inspires you to make music?

The passion that calls me to do it. I have a ton of ideas and sounds in my head that I want to turn into songs. I want to get every one of them written and recorded.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

I am a veteran and a patriot. I have strong feelings about lots of things. We need so many things to happen to change this country for the better. ALL the politicians who are running the country are making fools out of all of us in one from or another. We'll never settle any problems with hate and violence. We have to find peaceful solutions. Oh, and yes, sometimes there is no message at all, just simple songs about all kinds of stuff, that I hope will entertain others.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

very excited, have done it an awful lot either as a solo and/or a drummer. But those days are at least on hold for me. Right now, It's all about writing it , recording it and getting it out there. For better or worse. Damn the torpedo's .............

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

There are a million artists out there that are really talented that just can't get heard. I say "the musical landscape is littered with trash, it's not about quality, it's all about cash." ( those are my lyrics, so don't even think about it. ? Far too many artists with no real talent at all are being shoved out there to entertain the teeny boppers, the 10, 11 and 12 year olds who will eat up junk all day long. What about the rest of us who still have a deep appreciation for real solid, talent inspired music? At least a site like this is doing something to help all kinds of entertainers get some exposure. Gotta like that.

What do you think of Drooble?

There is an awful lot to like so far.Just a tiny tiny suggestion. In the interview section, if an instrument is not listed with the site, then you can't list it. It would be really cool if the list was expanded.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

Hearing crap music. I need the real stuff, with some teeth in it. Not pre programmed junk done with computers and no real skill. Some of the biggest people out there are some of the weakest musicians. I don't expect to get famous, I'm just here to entertain myself. But these folks are making millions with no skills whatsoever. That just doesn't seem fair for all the others who have some talent, but don't really get heard much, if at all.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

Oh yes. We go out regularly and support the local talent.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

I'm not sure really. Like I said, the kids are buying up mostly junk. How do you create quality music and get it heard? That's a VERY good question. Maybe I'll start my own radio station. LOL !

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.

There's a guy named Bow Thayer. He has an album called Sundowner that kicks off with a real cool song called Burning Miles. Secondly, I'll bet you've never heard of me. :)
