Robert Dunn

Story

I practice guitar everyday to project myself through it and communicate my feelings to all with an ear to hear. My style is unique as is my entire approach to the instrument. Most of my influences are not guitar players so I've had to redefine that to accommodate those influences. It's pretty crazy stuff and I can see why some would wonder why I would need to play that way. I just believe in listening you'll discover why. And thanks ahead of time for doing that.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Music is a release for me, a means of putting out onto the guitar what might get me arrested if I put it out any other way. It's a way of tapping into my inner self then dumping on the world and watching the reactions.

What is your music dream?

More people to dig my stuff without selling out. I know there are people out there like me that might need to hear what I do. Actually getting paid for it would be nice but secondary. I'll admit I'm a compliment hog and attention whore but hey, why not? I love playing for people but I don't necessarily need hotel keys to be tossed on the stage. In a good mood after a good set I might just buy drinks for the house but don't hold me to it!

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

A major spiritual rebirth were life is viewed as sacred including for small fluffy animals but, in general, for humanity. To awaken in everyone a full knowledge of God's love as manifested in the person of Jesus Christ and what He did for all of us. I guess I mean LOVE!!!

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

'A Hard Day's Night' by the Beatles

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

In Jazz it's Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, and Eric Dolphy. Plus lots of classic rock as well as composers from say, the last 100 years. Also other guitar shredders. And people that right decent original songs.

What inspires you to make music?

It's largely habitual. I just practice guitar everyday doing my masochistic exercises routine which are very therapeutic. Also, I love the spontaneity of the moment when I'm soloing and breaking all the rules when I'm composing.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

That feelings should be expressed and your dark side is OK to become friends with. You're OK just the way you are and God loves you.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

I just say 'let the chips fly where they may' then play my ass off. I like the look of shock just as well as the look of adulation. When people come up to me to talk I try to not come off like a veg case but remain coherent and all the other things my music is not.

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

It sucks and improving it would involve burning the music industry to the ground and starting over as well as illegalizing machines, sortware and other poor substitutes for real musical instrument that require practice to master.

What do you think of Drooble?

So far so good. It beats the pants off Soundclick and perhaps Soundcloud.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

That only a few musical genres are promoted by the music industry.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

I find local clubs and after I get a new car frequent them. I also follow local artists in my area via the internet.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

I really have no idea.

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.

Rick Zuniger and some other jazz guitarists that should have greater exposure than they do now.
