Richard Bignell

Story

I started out playing guitar but soon found that a bass player was more in demand. So I switched to bass as my primary instrument filling in on guitar when necessary. I also play banjo because I like folk and bluegrass music. I've played in a variety of bands in different genres: rock, punk, country, folk, progressive rock, and christian pop. I also play a pretty cool folk guitar. Lately, I like to experiment with electronic, ambient, and program music where a scene or scenario is described by sound. Basically, I like to tell a story with my music. One experiment that I uploaded here is "Big Jam at Hambone's." It presents a picture of a crowded nightclub with the house band doing a quick jam at someone's request. I created it with loops and sound effects from Logic Pro. The lead guitar is not real: I entered each note of the solo on the piano scroll input feature and added a lot of compression and distortion. The notes were added by creating a pattern based on my understanding of music theory. I've taken classes on music theory which I found to be helpful in creating arrangements, alternative chord structures, and unusual harmonies. Live performances of ambient music is where I'm heading, but being here on Drooble is fun and an informative distraction in the meantime.
