Story

I sing for Dereliction, a group of young guys from Illinois who are trying to make it out of here through our music. I'm influenced heavily by classic and hardcore punk and hair metal and didn't find death metal until I was out of high school. I like to try and bridge the gap between the two genres in a unique way.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Music is everything to me. I'm sure the amount of music I listen to would drive the average listener insane.

What is your music dream?

I'd like to headline a big open air rock festival at least once in my life.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

Reforming the police system and convincing the government to create laws that nurture a more rehabilitative experience in jail/prison, rather than a punishing one.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

Tom Sawyer by Rush. I used to jam that song with my dad before heading to sports games in middle school.

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

Black Breath, Gatecreeper, and Suburban Scum are my 3 most recent favorites. They combine hardcore punk and metal in such a unique way. Definitely an inspiration. My all time favorites would have to go to Lamb of God, Sex Pistols, and Motley Crue. The Sex Pistols were the first band I really got into, and heavily influenced my taste in punk rock. Motley Crue really gave me a sense of what real rock musicians do in their free time. I often spent time as a kid in awe, watching them destroy hotel rooms in their behind the scenes videos. Lamb of God introduced me to in death metal my senior year of high school. In my opinion, they have a perfect mix of modern and old-school metal, which I respect. I think it's important that we take inspiration from artists that most people might call "dated".

What inspires you to make music?

Growing up listening to great bands influenced me to pick up the guitar and start writing.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

Live a rebellious lifestyle. Toss away old norms and traditions. Most importantly, have fun.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

Powerful but also vulnerable. You hold the entire crowd in the palm of your hand, but one major slip and you could lose their interest.

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

The music scene is watered down with everyone who has a microphone and a computer. This ultimately leads to more potentially great artists being discovered, but it also gives everyone else less of a chance. One thing I think would help is streaming companies paying more of a percentage of their royalties to the artist, and helping smaller artists with good content on the platform grow.

What do you think of Drooble?

It seems like a good way to share my music with people who will understand it and offer constructive criticism.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

Being told I can't play a gig because of my music style.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

Yes. I go to all the local basement and bar shows I have time for and have made a few good friends from the bands in the local scene.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

Uniquity, a catchy hook, and most of all, luck.

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.

Turnstile, Mizery, Suburban Scum, Incendiary, The Bronx
