This depends a lot of the genre, and moment in time. An escape. A guaranteed detour from the mundane. A coping mechanism. A stimulant. And sometimes, in terms of making it, just a way to keep myself occupied and entertained.

The urge to fabricate specific feelings that can be invoked through art. Not too worried about which ones they are. Numbness, anxiety, aggression, hype, grandeur, stimulation, sadness, contentedness. Regardless of if it I even hit my target, the idea of being able to manipulate what's going on in our heads is pretty intriguing to me.
