Kelly Mckenna

Story

I play guitar/bass in a band called Lick My Soul©, with my son Shane on drums, and my husband Iggy on bass, keys and vocals. I met Iggy in early 2016, and we began dating, because of our shared love of music. We were toying with the idea of putting together an acoustic act. In the meantime, I brought my son, Shane, over to Iggy's place to jam with us. After a couple nights of playing covers, Iggy suggested that we try one of his original songs. Within minutes, Shane and I added our touches to the song, and "Assassin"© was born! Each song after that was just as effortless as the first, and it became clear that we were on to something. Just over a month later, Lick My Soul© made their debut in Atlantic City, NJ, and two and half months after that, we went into the studio to record an EP containing the six original songs we started with. We then recorded four more songs because our producer suggested that we complete an LP! "Sulphur & Burnt Metal" was released in July 2017. What is music to you? What does it give you?

When I was young, and began playing guitar, music was therapeutic, a safe haven. Now music is a joy that soothes my soul.

What is your music dream?

I am living my music dream. I am in a band with my husband and son, we recorded an album, we play live and enjoy our local music community by supporting other artists.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

I would start with how we as humans relate to, and treat, each other.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

There are so many....

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

There are so many....

What inspires you to make music?

My family.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

No message, just enjoy!

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

It is exhilarating, and I still experience some stage fright when I first take the stage.

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

The internet has really opened up the business for musicians to be their own producers, agents, etc. My husband and I host house concerts during the summer, and all of the acts are indie artists that put together their own tours. I am not sure what could be improved, but, the one thing I don't care for is "pay to play".

What do you think of Drooble?

I have been a member for a couple of days....so far so good!

What frustrates you most as a musician?

Pay to play.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

If my band is not playing, we go out to see friends play whenever possible.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

The internet provides many platforms, use them!

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.
