Heartfelt emotions emanate from her guitar, while truth flows through her lyrics. She invites her audience into her world. Kai Mata is an Indonesian-American Singer-Songwriter whose personal lyrics and soulful voice transport listener’s into her wild journey: a twenty-one-year-old who has spent the past eight years exploring the Earth, and thus herself. Kai Mata is best known for her emotive singing, impressive instrumental versatility, and vulnerable lyricism that paints the human existence. She comes on stage not just to share her music, but to create an impactful experience. Involving her audience in a voyage full of laughter and tears, she and her listeners unite, showcased through her 2018 debut album Time to Shine—a folk album that explores both the light and the shadows it casts. Going to a Kai Mata show is to hop into a time machine. Expect to be transported: into the past and future, deep into the present moment, and into the places that make us all human. She’s shared her music around the world, from summer festivals in the States (Sonic Bloom and SoulPlay Fest), the desert valleys of Egypt, the Himalayan peaks of India, to her most current home, Indonesia, and she is excited to share it with you.
Music lives as a way to combine rhythms, melodies, and beats to surpass what sole words can accomplish on their own. It encompasses emotions and the existence of grief, love, joy, confusion, and melancholy, all through ways connected to the heart. It gives me a medium to share the fruits of my soul in a way I know others will enjoy and appreciate.

How to express oneself in a way others can understand.
Connected. I aspire to create relations at the heart level, going beyond the surface and diving into the depths of us that define our essence. To move people with words is to create a bond, where an individual and I can journey together into our light and our shadows.
I work with local producers, videographers, and session musicians when I record, and consistently go to open mics and the other gigs around town. We make an effort to jam together, and know each others' songs by heart. I'm a big fan of working with the people around me, helping fellow friends with gigs and their merchandise in the areas I feel strong in, knowing they will reciprocate.
