John Baker

Bio

I am an experimental rhythm guitar player/songwriter. I’ve been playing in a cover band for the past 8 years and just recently took an exit from it. Why… because in my area there is just not enough money in it for the work and time that is put into it. I started writing my own material about 2 years ago with just a DAW and a cell phone, but since then I have upgraded all my equipment and now have a pretty nice little home studio that I am very proud of. I originally started wanting to bring back the sounds of 80’s hard rock and gave myself the name “The Old School” with the thoughts that I would change it when I got a little direction and thought of something that was better, but it just kind of stuck and now that is what all my friends know me as, so I guess it’s here to stay. Lol. I write pretty much write anything that comes to mind and I am not afraid to venture into any genre. My primary focus is straight Rock N Roll and Metal, but I find I have the most fun composing Symphonic Metal pieces that tell a story musically. Some of my influences are: Kiss, Ted Nugent, WASP, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Dio, Scorpions, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, The Beatles, Tom Petty, just to name a few. I also have roots in classic country and Hip Hop.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

music is my addiction.... it gives me the means to escape the things that trouble me from day to day and also gives me a chance to make an impression on someone... hopefully an inspiring musician

What is your music dream?

to have a song i have written be picked up by a well known artist and done on an album

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

i would like take us back to a more simpler time. alice cooper wrote a song (cold machines) a few years back that, in my opinion, really sums things up as to how we, as humans, are in these modern times. we are so emotionless and live and die by our cell phones. we really don't know who anyone really is anymore. life is like one big sims game and that is not right.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

dr. love

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

kiss, lacuna coil, ted nugent, bad company, nightwish, megadeth, metallica, exodus, ac/dc, godsmack, loverboy, bob seager, rolling stones, pink floyd

What inspires you to make music?

things that happen to me or things i tend to come across.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

i don't really want to send any messages. since i will never be a millionaire or do anything to garner any real attention, i would just like to give this cold world a little something from myself that will live on after i am gone that could possibly have a positive impact of some sort on someone.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

ha ha.... ya.... a little nervous at first, but when things are going good... there are no words and when things are going bad... i just wanna die!!! lol

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

the hardest working musicians out there are the independent artist like myself that will spend hours on a track that only a few will hear and the comments he/she gets is the reward. nowadays musicians will never know or have any legacies like the bands of the 50' 60's 70's and 80's... with social media, downloads, and youtube... there is no longer any money in music and the way people listen to music nowadays... you will not have the songs that live on for 20+ years as like a lot of the songs from the past.

What do you think of Drooble?

so far... it seems pertty cool... jury is still out on it

What frustrates you most as a musician?

lack of exposure

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

i listen and comment and work with as many musicians as i can

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

i have never had my stuff heard by a large audience so i can not answer this
