Joey Paul

Story

Joey Paul is an indie-pop singer/songwriter. Describing himself as a “slave for words”, this lyrical artisan is full of song ideas and he loves nothing more than to share them with as many people as possible. Influenced by the smooth and poppy sound of Jack Johnson and the guitar skills of John Mayer, Joey’s style is bouncy in a relaxed kind of way- a warm Sunday afternoon kind of sound. JP Cooper, an up and coming artist from the UK, also plays a major influential role in Joey's later songwriting. Drawing inspiration from Cooper’s graceful ability to make his melodies feel unique, by travelling – subtly interloping his warm lower register with minty fresh high notes, all with relatable lyrics and catchy melody lines. Joey Paul has a soft spot for writing songs about love and discovering its presence in people and in life.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Music is everything to me, it's what I love doing most. It's my passion and it's a creative outlet to get stuff off my chest. It gives me a hope and a dream to aspire to.

What is your music dream?

I want to be able to make a living from song writing.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

I think there are too many factors in play and I'm not intelligent enough to make big changes without messing something up along the way. So I don't have any advice other than to spread love, not hate. haha

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

I remember being mesmerized as a really young kid by a live band playing "I say a little prayer" Aretha Franklin

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

I am a big fan of JP Cooper at the moment, but some of my biggest influences would have to be Jack Johnson, John Mayer and One Republic

What inspires you to make music?

I just have so much fun writing songs and singing, I couldn't imagine not doing it.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

I want to spread love and kindness, I just want to make people happy.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

I love it when the crowd is really attentive and singing along, so it depends on the audience.

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

I think it's a great time to be a musician, anyone can have a voice these days online and get their music heard.

What do you think of Drooble?

I think it's great, I get a few people listening to my music every week and that's a nice feeling.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

As a musician it can be frustrating sometimes to practice and improve but it's always worth it in the end.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

I love the local artists in my town, everyone is so nice and there is so much talent going around. I love to go to live gigs and buy all the local albums <3

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

They need to have persistence and a mind for marketing. They also need to have patience, practice loads and write lots of music in order to stand out.

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.

Just Flare is a local band in my area and they are absolutely killing it, Amy Pegg is another local artist and she introduced me to Drooble, she has amazing music, check her out!
