Gunther Huyghe

Story

Gunther Huyghe, also known as Gabriel Scar, started his singing career in February 2004. The name Gabriel Scar is composed out of 2 parts. The last name SCAR finds its origin in the scar on his left leg. This is a reminder of his period as a competition cyclist. He had an accident and his leg was broken in three places. This, off course, has healed completely by now. The first name GABRIEL was chosen because his friends always told him that he had the heart of an angel. This was because of the fact that he is always ready to help others. That's why the name of the archangel Gabriel was chosen. Because it also starts with a G, like his real name Gunther. In those starting years, Glenn (from the well known boysband "Get Ready!"? helped him get started, by giving him voice coaching lessons. He finally sent Gabriel through to a very good famale, Dutch opera-singer, in Borgerhout (Belgium). There, Gabriel still takes classical singing lessons. Which he thinks are very important, even if you sing rock songs. Gabriel has already performed during some big events, like Gentse Feesten (Ghent), Geelse Kanaalfeesten, Donkfeesten in Lier, Leest Sings, Stars Night 2007 (Antwerp Expo), the Netherlands, Scotland, etc. He also participated in different singing competitions, where he got some very good results. Winner of "Soundmix Boontje 2007", in Asse (Belgium). 2nd place in "Kirvin Goes Live 2008", in Mechelen (Belgium). 2nd in "Mister Voice of The Crew", in Tremelo-Baal (Belgium). 3rd in Diksmuide-Beerst (Belgium) and also in Berlaar (Belgium). And finals in very big competitions like "The Brilliant Voice" (2x), "The Brilliant Voice of Ghent", "Golden Microphones", etc. Gabriel Scar also writes songs himself. It's mostly pop-rock and ballads. He's working on a repertoire of his own, with mostly his own songs, filled up with a few beautiful cover songs. In September 2009 he started the band project Gabriel Scar. Current band members: - Lead vocals: Gabriel Scar (Gunther Huyghe) - Lead guitar: Jon Arthur (Joni Claerhoudt) - Rhythm guitar: Glenn Verschueren - Bass guitar: Pyro (Jari Van Wezemael) - Drums: Bram Vermeir Gabriel has also already had a few National Television performances In 2005: Interview on "Man Bijt Hond" (VRT) In 2007: Singing a song on Jim-TV In 2009: BIG WINNER of "1 of the 3" on the TV show Muziektoppers (music program), after winning 3 episodes in a row. So, he appeared on television (S-Television) 4 episodes in a row, the first 3 times during one minute, the 4th time with his complete song. In 2017: One of their songs, namely "Hello Princess, Hello Angel", was used in episode 20 of the Belgian youth series "De Regel van 3s" on National television (Ketnet).

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Peace of mind. A way of communicating about my feelings and the things I think about. A way of connecting with other people. In a way, it's emotions.

What is your music dream?

First of all getting my music heared by as many people as possible. I also dream of performing on big festival stages.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

What most people should start with, themselves. I try to be the best person I can be, every day.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

Strange enough, songs that were before my time. I really love the music of the 70s and 80s, although I was only born in 1979. I guess one of my big favourites is "The Show Must Go On" by Queen.

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

Queen, Alice Cooper, Kamelot, Nightwish, Rammstein, Alphaville, Peter Schilling, and so many more.

What inspires you to make music?

My emotions, my family, my friends, my daughter, other music, everything around me.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

Every song has a different message in which I hope that people can recognize themselves.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

That is the most wonderfull feeling, certainly with a good band behind you, and when you see that the people appreciate your music and start jumping along, when you start jumping. :-)

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

At the moment, in Belgium, when you bring original songs (so not a cover band) it's very difficult to get chances to perform. I hope we can get more performances.

What do you think of Drooble?

Looks nice, until now.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

Not getting any chances for performances, on radio and on TV.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

Sometimes I try to go and watch other bands (not always possible when you have a little daughter and you have your own band and so on), I try to help other musicians, and I sometimes buy CD's of other local bands.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

Someone with good connections. At least in Belgium you really need that, if you want to be able to play on summer festivals, like our band.
