Her poetic skills were developed at the tender age of 11, having her first poem titled “Valentine’s Day” published at the Poetry Institute of Africa under the Anthology - Fairytale moon. Gigi Lamayne developed her writing skills into rap by the age of 16, taking inspiration from the likes of Jean Grae, Bob Marley, Brenda Fassie and Tupac Shakur. Gigi Lamayne’s talent was realised at an exchange programme in the UK under the Branson Scholarship programme at Stowe School Buckingham where her performance took a runner-‐ up position, as well as at The DCS showdown East District in 2011 where she scooped an award in the category: Best in Rap. Gigi Lamayne uses her life experiences as inspiration to take to the entertainment stage. Somewhat of a feminist, you will always find deeper meaning in her lyrics, which she hopes many will identify with. Adding on to the exciting news, Gigi Lamayne released a surprise single titled Iphupho which debuted on Metro FM. Although she is hailed as one of the world’s most exciting female MCs, this multi-award winning artist succeeds in blowing fans away with her incredible vocals. The rapper and business woman can be recognized from her hit single “1 Bar” as well as her collaboration with international fashion brand Puma. The singer, songwriter, rapper and poet has made a magnificent impact on the growth and development of the female MC scene in Africa.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

As much as Karl Marx believed in music as the opiate of the people, I believe in music as the ultimate opiate. Crossing genres, nations, race and beliefs.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

I would start with the girl child and perceptions of her. I would start by creating more forums to support the girl childs growth and progress in a society which deems her domesticated and incapable of co-existing with her male counterparts in the working world.

Lauryn Hill, Tracy Chapman, Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur.

What inspires you to make music?

The society I am in. I tell the stories of its people within my music.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

I want people to live a life of purpose after listening to my music. I would like there to be a message of peace and self determination.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

ALIVE!

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

The standard of appreciation while the musician is still alive, is really important.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

The lack of unity amongst musicians.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

Yes. I attend concerts and purchase the music.
