Gaia Cauchi

Story

At just two and a half years, Gaia kicked-off her career, wanting to mesmerise an audience with the few notes that encompass a young toddler. Throughout the past 12 years, Gaia has kept herself extremely busy, both in the local and the foreign music scene, with the latter at times taking precedence. In the 2013 edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, Gaia was chosen internally by the Public Broadcasting Services to be the Maltese representative. At the event, held in Ukraine, she performed the original track "The Start" where she placed first, making Malta the host of the competition the year after. In 2018 Gaia had decided to audition for X Factor UK, where she was given four yeses in her first audition where she auditioned as a soloist but then she was given the opportunity to enter the group called “Sweet Sense” and they advanced all the way to the judges houses while being mentored by Robbie Williams. Last June Gaia performed during the Isle of MTV Malta, the biggest music festival on the Island with an audience reaching 40,000. Headlining the event amongst others there were:Ava Max, Bebe Rexha and DJ Martin Garrix. Currently Gaia is writing and producing her own new material which is due to be released in the coming months.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Like every other artist music is everything to me but is also the only way I can express myself when I am in situations I cannot explain myself, sometimes it feels better having a conversation with myself through singing than actually having a one to one conversation with another person. It gives me freedom to express what I truly want to say. I am a very weird person.. when I sing it makes me feel like I fit in with the rest of the people around me because when people listen to music, they can actually relate to it.. be it because of the message of the song or just simply because of the music.

What is your music dream?

Whatever gets me closer to happiness… since always and all I can remember there wasn’t anything else in my life apart music everything evolved around it. Somehow no matter what I am going through it has always proved to be a solution for everything.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

I would start by converting all the fake and negative people in this world in better people. These people are creating a lot of damage in our society especially with the younger generation.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

The most memorable song from my childhood would probably always be “White Flag” by Dido. My mum used to tell me that when I was still months old sleeping in our car, as soon as she played this song, I would open my eyes …. and would fall back to sleep as soon as it ends.

What inspires you to make music?

I cannot specifically answer this question because it all goes down to what I am going through at that very moment.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

We all have different kind of voices make sure its heard !

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

It always depends on the audience you have in front of you. Sometimes it could be a very small audience yet they make you feel they are in thousands. When it’s a good audience it gives me adrenaline that kind that it takes me off my feet.

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

I feel that sometimes everything is too scripted. When I listen to someone sing or play and you can hear the vulnerability its makes me feel more connected to the song than a performance which is more staged.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

Artists are only, most of the time, respected when they make it.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

I am a massive fan of all those who are not scared to dream big and work hard towards their dreams

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

Since there are so many new artist all the time it’s very hard to pin point certain quality as nowadays the music industry I think is more open to different styles of Musicians. So I guess being you is the best quality you can have.

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.
