Waking the Dead

I used to be an artist, now I’m not so sure. Perhaps I’m a murderer. Perhaps I cannibalized part of my own soul. Maybe I’ve been poisoned. What’s certain is that I need to fix this. I need to fix this.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Music is emotion that can touch and commune with others in ways that mere words cannot convey. It grounds me, flies me, seduces me, loves me, frustrates me and sometimes is me.

What is your music dream?

My music dream. To play guitar so well that people want to hear it - crave it! To be able to spin melody lines so sweet you'd shed tears, to play riffs so driving that you're aroused to move, dance and screw.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

Basic income for everyone. That would do away with many bad things - theft, the need for charitable organisations, religious groups who feed on both the rich and poor alike, political lies promising jobs or better living conditions until they're elected, slavery and a multitude of things I probably haven't even considered.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

Bernard & Bianca The Rescuers (Who will rescue me?) Title Song

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

Oh, man. That changes from day to day but there are a couple of them that seem to stick. Guns 'n Roses, Frank Zappa, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Tom Waits and Nick Cave seem to always be in my playlist.

What inspires you to make music?

Nothing. Everything. I simply make music.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

I find a good song amplifies the message or memories you have inside you already. Let the song seep in and enjoy it!

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

I love it! It puts a huge smile on my face just reading this question!

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

It's a mess. It feels like the industry makes product (artificially contrived) that the public is told to believe is cool and good and must have. How about supporting good art? How about supporting artists with lyrics beyond "Baby" repeated 50 times? How about supporting music that wobbles your dirty-bits?

What do you think of Drooble?

I'm not sure yet. I've only just joined but it looks promising.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

The unbelievable murkiness of the waters. The absolute opaqueness of how to turn talent into a means of putting food on the table.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

The most I've been able to do so far is buy festival tickets. Although I live in Belgium and have Flemish roots, I find it difficult to socialise as English is my first language. Long story. However I am going to find the local musician scene and support the hell out of it.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

A loud voice? I'm guessing a strong social media presence and the odd paid-for Facebook advert wouldn't hurt. That's a guess though. I'm new to this side of things.

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.

Hmmm. Falling Mirror - band, Just Jinjer - band, Bic Runga, Koos Kombuis, Jo Day.
