Story

When I started pursuing a career in the music industry, I wanted to be a singer-songwriter in country music. So I started by going to school in the epicenter of the country music business. I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 2012 with a B.S. in Recording Industry Management and a concentration in Commercial Songwriting. Mid way through, I became disillusioned with the country music industry, and I did a bit of self-reflection. My song changed, so to speak, as my understanding of myself changed. I wrote a post-progressive rock demo album in 2011 called "Grass" (and finally self-produced it in 2016.) I found new resonance with gothic metal, and it seems to be where my passion as an artist is now. Feel free to check out my artist links (goblartistry) and the links to my gothic metal project Carpe Noctum (FB/IG/YouTube), for which I'm the vocalist, lyricist, and composer.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Music is a means of sharing a spiritual connection with other human beings. My original music gives me a safe space to express my truth creatively, and to explore that truth in a purely intellectual manner (words, vocalizations, melodies, et cetera).

What is your music dream?

To play on stage at the major European metal festivals & to release my magnum opus.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

No more physical borders. We can still keep them for designating boundaries on maps, but I would do away with the physical manifestations. I prefer to hope for a unified world, not a divided one.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Clint Black's "Walkin' Away."

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

Nightwish, Draconian, Silentium, Death Angel, Delain, Heart

What inspires you to make music?

A yearning for something deeper.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

Depends on the project.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

I feel like it's one of the few places in this world I belong.

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

Musicians and artists unfortunately work for free more than they should, and those that should be compensating them expect something for nothing more than they should (venues included). For all the value we place on creativity in the cultural sense, that value does not often translate well into compensating creative individuals adequately. We still have a long way to go in making sure artists and bands get adequately compensated for their creative cultural contributions.

What do you think of Drooble?

Seems okay so far. I'm fond of the idea of a social network for musicians.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

The lack of drive musicians seem to have when it comes to moving their career or potential career forward.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

I support my local scene by attending shows where I know the band is getting paid. And I support bands by buying merch.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

Work ethic and self discipline. Publishing show posters on Facebook isn't enough. When you're a band starting out, your success is a direct result of how much effort you put into getting your music out there - that's a reflection of work ethic. Self discipline is a necessary quality for meeting every goal one sets for oneself.
