Broken Step

Broken Step's Story

Broken Step is a two bedroom, two bath home we are converting into a recording studio and rehearsal space for local artists and artist passing through. We are still in our infancy but we are operational. We have a drum room, isolation booth, live room and desperate control room. 16 track recording with an array of house instruments ranging from a seven piece drum kit, to a hammered dulcimer, to basses guitars, violins and saxophone. And a few keyboards, drum machine, groove box and DJ "scratch" gear to round it out. Our mission is to help new artist have a venue to create quality recordings to get out to the masses.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Music has always been home. A welcoming friend whether happy or sad, music will be right there to be happy or sad with you.

What is your music dream?

Operating a studio that is successful enough to truly help new artists get honest help with no strings attached. The goal is to spread the music not to male a million dollars.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

Free the music!!!

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

Wow, so many, but I have to say Stairway to Heaven (Zepplin) opened a whole new world of music to me and then Alive (Pearl Jam) showed me that there is even a larger universe out there.

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

We at Broken Step have many infulences. Begining with the classic greats, Zepplin, Floyd, Sabbath, Dio, The Beatles, Stones and The Who. But also much of the new music. Hip Hop, Rap, Metal, Grunge and Experimental. We like to draw inspiration from the classics, but we strive to create new and exciting music.

What inspires you to make music?

We are super pumped to create new sounds. There is nothing more thrilling than to see the excitment of an artist hearing their song mastered. Gives me goosebumps just writting about it.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

The message we want to send is that new music is not dead. New music is being made every day you just have to search it out.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

A bit of anxiety but I love it. Keeps me sharpe.

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

In my opinion, many feel there is nothing new to be made, no one can make it big unless you sell out. I disagree. New venues, such as Drooble for example, are popping up everyday. Just press in and push forward.

What do you think of Drooble?

Revolutionary. Finally, musicians have a place to gather and geek out over music.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

Writters block, Aarrrrggghhhh.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

ABSOLUTELY!! We open our studio up to struggling artist as a rehearsal space and we even do demos pro bono.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

Take no prisoners, never a break attitude. You ease your way anlong this path. You must be 110% 25/8, 366.

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.
